The Treasures of Jesus: A Meditation on the Sermon on the Mount

The Treasures of Jesus: A Meditation on the Sermon on the Mount

This book is a thoughful commentary about the Sermon on the Mount, which is a collection of the sayings of Jesus of Nazareth to be found in Matthew's Gospel (Chapters 5-70). The Sermon is one of the world's most important documents because it records the sayings of a person who, at the very least, was a great religious teacher. Christians, of course, believe that Jesus was more that that -- in fact, that he was the Son of God.

The author comments on the text, drawing out its meaning, but also discusses the implications of the sayings of Jesus today. At the end of each section there are three suggested readings from other parts of the Bible. Each set of readings illuminates one of the sayings of Jesus and they are specially chosen to take up the same theme. Also, there is an appropriate prayer after each section.

The book can be used by individuals to learn more about the implications of what Jesus said in his Sermon. They will be able then to meditate on the sayings. At the same time, the material is suitable for study groups and certainly the sayings, together with the author's comments, do stimulate discussion.
