Gilt pyx with coloured enamel design, suitable for carrying the Blessed Sacrament to the sick & housebound
The design shows the Dove with the Olive leaf it its beak as described in Genesis 8, v.11 "and the dove came back to him in the evening, and lo, in her mouth a freshly plucked olive leaf; so Noah knew that the waters had subsided from the earth." The Dove is the recognised symbol for peace.
The dove is superimposed upon the rainbow, symbol of the peace which God made between Himself and Man in Genesis 9 v. 12 "And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will look upon it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.”
The Rainbow is also a recognised International Peace flag, first used in 1961, commonly seen in Italy, where these pyxes are made.
