Teaching your child to pray is an essential part of instilling the Catholic faith in your offspring. And praying as a family is enriching for adults too. Here are a few guidelines on how to introduce your children to prayer and thus enrich the spiritual lives of all your family.
1. EXPLAINING WHAT PRAYER IS
Tell your children what prayer is, why it is important to you, why you like to pray and ask them what they think about prayer. An appropriate time to discuss prayer would be in the evenings or mornings, as part of your family prayer.
2. BEING PRESENT
Pray aloud with your children so they can learn the rhythm and routine of prayer. Be a guide as to what they should pray for and how they should pray. Be an example to your children.
3. REMIND THEM PRAYER CAN BE INFORMAL TOO
You do not need to pressure your children to speak to God in formal or "proper" phrases. Remind them they can talk to God about anything and everything. Don't discourage a child from sharing their favourite music and stories, and their happiest and saddest experiences with God.
4. PRAYER AT ALL TIMES
Whilst we are assigned specific times to pray (morning and evening, before meals and school), you should remind your children that they can pray at any time and that God loves to hear from us whenever our hearts tell us to pray.
5. BEGIN SIMPLY
Start teaching your children simple prayers, biblical quotations and songs from an early age. This will provide them with a secure foundation in their spiritual lives.
