Mgr Gerald Ewing, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Southwark

Before it entered the Christian lexicon, hope was regarded by many of the ancients as entirely negative. Even now, most people would be hard-pressed to say what it is or what justifies it. And yet, despite being so often confused with optimism, which is an accident of temperament, the virtue of hope is one of the most pervasive of all human dispositions, a gift from God, that keeps us looking towards God as our final goal and, indeed, takes us to God.

So much in our own lives and around us in the world might invite despair rather than hope. But this collection of elegant essays is a timely reminder of how central to our lives is the virtue of hope, even if the Cinderella of the three theological virtues. What these cogently argued and widely varying expressions of hope have in common is that they concur with the view of Dostoevsky that hope is to our spirits what oxygen is to our lungs; to live without hope is not to live at all.
